Cosplay Competition
The Canberra Nara Candle Festival will be hosting a Cosplay Competition on Saturday 26 October 2024
Hosted by Emerald King, Lecturer in Humanities (UTAS), Cosplayer and recent Australian representative at the World Cosplay Summit held in Japan (August 2024), this friendly competition aims to bring the Canberra Cosplay community together to share their costumes in a fun and family friendly environment, while enjoying a festival celebrating the Canberra – Nara sister city relationship and Japanese culture.
Cosplay appeared more than 30 years ago and has become an element of the everyday landscape in Japan, and the phenomenon is gaining momentum across the world including in Australia. The cosplayer (costume player) impersonates their favourite manga, anime, or video game character by wearing the same costume and adopting their personality and mannerism.
Whether you are a well-rounded cosplayer or a total beginner you are invited to enter the Canberra Nara Candle Festival Cosplay competition.
Categories
- Best Constructed – Your costume should be inspired by Japanese media (anime, manga, tokusatsu like Power Rangers or Godzilla, or games) and made by you, with at least 60% of it being handmade. We’ll be looking at the overall quality, how well it represents the character, your presentation, and how well you’ve brought your cosplay to life.
- Best Compiled - Best Constructed – This category is for costumes inspired by Japanese anime, manga, tokusatsu (like Power Rangers or Godzilla), or games. You’ll need to show your creativity by altering purchased elements. If you’re using an entirely bought costume, please get in touch with the organizers. Judging will be based on costume design, presentation, and accuracy to the character.
- Fan Favourite– The Fan Favourite will go to the contestant who gets the loudest cheers and the most love from the audience.
